This paper examines local pilgrimage traditions in Morocco during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, compares them to the pilgrimage to Mecca

This paper is intended to offer perspective on pilgrimage to saint’s tombs, Hajj, and on the increasing destruction of saint’s tombs in North Africa. This paper discusses issues of gender and modernity in Islamic pilgrimage that are overlooked in the news reports of saints’ tombs destruction.
